Taking it to a jeweler to fill the hole would probably be more than the coin is worth as a cull.

As sad as it is, it would still fill a hole in my 3CN collection. I'm bidding on it!

Just a hole in my collection, not a hole in the album.

j_h_s....I wonder if there's a technique for removing it while essentially doing no harm to the coin?

Prethen, I'm a nurse, maybe I could help. But who needs it most--you or the coin!

I'm sure there is. Thanks to Wikipedia, solder melts at 361°F, gold melts at 1947°F.

DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'm TALKING ABOUT!

So, I'd suggest putting it in the oven at 400°F and place some solder remover on top of the coin once it's hot.

14kt gold solder melts at between 1255 and 1440 degrees F depending on it's exact makeup. 18Kt between 1360 and 1530 degrees.

I have what's most likely a metal-trial penny that was pressed into a "lucky penny" holder.

That is so unbelievable. I was only planning on bidding on it up to $60. There are some interesting people out there.
