Hey folks, I'd like you to look at this Half Cent and tell me what you think happened in its 207 year history to account for the unusual color. Aborted dipping, normal wear, other cleaning?

I'm just curious to know if there's something I didn't think about.

Rest in Peace

Appears to be some black goopie material on the coin.

It's the abrupt line between the dark area and the bright copper color that makes me wonder if and how it was cleaned at some point. The 1809 Half Cent in my collection is universally dark, similar to the dark area on this coin. I don't see bright red copper coins from 1809 that haven't been ruled as "improperly cleaned" by TPGs.

This is pretty clearly a circulated coin and circulated Half Cents are unlikely to show any original red color. So, this example must have been treated in some way to brighten the surfaces. I expect the current appearance is a temporary phase in the coin's re-toning process. Maybe if it eventually attains a darkish bronze color it will look more natural.

This coin is COUNTERFEIT! The stars should be larger, and there are dozens of tool marks/die lines in the date area. STAY AWAY AND REPORT!

Genuine coin. Notice the shape of the chin. The style on the suspect coin did not appear until 1825.

Good catch! I was wondering about the partial star on R side & the incomplete "L"
in Liberty.

Thanks TC971793. Do you think the seller knew what he had?

Nice work! After I posted I was wondering about the color, and even noticed the incomplete L, but thought nothing of it. I better stick with what I know best - silver dollars ;)

The day I posted I also saw another 1809 1/2c with an incomplete L on ebay. I don't think I noticed it today... hopefully it did not sell.

No. He seemed genuinely surprised that is was counterfeit.
