After going through two rolls of these 1944 War Nickels, and every one of them has a notched serif on the S, I am guessing this notch is nothing special. Too bad not all of them have something similar - it would have made a nice DDO.

I have no way to verify if it ism or not a DDO. What it may well be is Master Die Doubling, happening on many of the dies when they were hubbed. Have to look at mine and see if I see any thing like that.

The first one had me thinking, then I saw it on all the rest of them also. These are all circulation finds from various times during the 60s-80s, so I am assuming this amount of randomness means its just in the design as a whole.

Hi Earl - follow this link: http://www.varietyvista.com/04a%20J...arieties.htm

The notch is normal for the year/ODV.
