and in the very early slabs you don't find the cleaned coins.

If I remember correctly, in the early years of the TPGs they wouldn't slab them, they'd send them back in a plastic bag noting the problem, and is where the term "body bagged" came into the hobby.

As long as TPG acknowledges that coins have been cleaned or have details then you get what you pay for I hope.

I have a few coins in my type collection that may have been cleaned in the past. But they look so good, I don't care. The cleaning would have been minor, and for me at least, it's truly hard to tell if they were indeed cleaned. The only reason I suspect cleaning is that I got them raw at a very nice price. I can tell an obviously cleaned coin, but these, if cleaned, are not obvious.

But like I said, they look so nice--and they basically look UNcleaned--that even if an expert said "Cleaned, junk, get it out of my sight I'm about to puke," it wouldn't bother me. I'd keep them to show them off to my friends who wouldn't know the difference anyway.

I'm not talking about Details graded coins, I was talking about straight graded coins that were noticeable cleaned. In some case the cleaning was just ignored, in others it was clear the grade was just reduced a little and then slabbed as a no problem coin.

That was true at first, but with the early coins there just aren't enough pieces that aren't messed with and demand is too high. They just kind of started looking the other way and coins with problems that would have been bodybagged on later series began being straight graded on earlier series.

Certainly some cleaned coins can be unattractive, especially if the color is messed with. However, if the cleaning in essence simply robs the coin of some details, then I can't understand why it can't just be graded at the level appropriate for the detail that remains. It is still a coin (I really hate when someone says a cleaned coin is body-bagged, dead, whatever... as if it is no longer a coin!) Yea, I get it, it has been modified, but so is every coin in circulation! Some cleaning methods like polishing and whizzing will leave unsightly scratches and unnatural surface appearance, but a coin that was unfortunately nonetheless carefully cleaned and yet naturally toned seems like it should still be acceptable at the resulting graded detail level.

Ooooh, this is a real tough one. I have been conditioned by my time here no this forum to accept the fact that cleaning destroys the value of a coin and, all things considered, I would much prefer an uncleaned coin in pristine and shiny condition than one that is only shiny because it has been cleaned. But I can't afford too many uncleaned coins that are in pristine and shiny condition, and I have to admit that some uncleaned coins don't have that much eye appeal. But cleaning them destroys the value!

For coins that are rare and valuable, I grudgingly go with uncleaned examples even if they are very dark and could really use a good cleaning, since I know that cleaning them would really kill their value. As a result, I have a small number of coins like the following which I really wish looked better:

Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You?

This coin cost me thousands of dollars, but it would have cost many thousands more if it were still bright and shiny (and uncleaned).

On the other hand, I have a few coins that have no doubt been cleaned but they aren't investment-grade coins to begin with and I just love the way they look. These are coins I bought specifically for my 7070 type album and eye appeal and amount of detail is much more important than the actual value. For example:

Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You? Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You?

Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You? Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You?

Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You? Do-Cleaned-Coins-Bother-You?

Barryg, that 1799 dollar is gorgeous as it is!

Well, I'd say that if you like it so much you can have it, but...

I actually do like it and would never ever consider cleaning it, but I just wish I could have afforded an even better example that wasn't so dark. Sadly, in uncleaned condition, that would run me, what, $10K? More? Waaaaaaaay too rich for my blood.

Usually I stay away from cleaned coins but I do have a few classic commemorative coins that have been certified (PCGS and NGC) improperly cleaned but were very expensive MS 66 or better. They are MS 60 -62 but I'm happy with them.

If its only to remove surface grime so you can see details without scratching or removing metal, I'm all for it.
