I was having a look at the RCM's April releases this evening and was knocked out by one coin in particular - the $100 10-ounce silver coin The Angel of Victory: 100th Anniversary of the First World War Armistice coin.

IMO, it is the hands-down most outstanding offering of the month's releases.

The coin is based on the fabulous sculpture created by the London-born sculptor Coeur de Lion McCarthy. The statue was commissioned in 1921 by the Canadian Pacific Railroad to honor its employees who answered the call of war and made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I. CPR installed three copies of the statues, one each in Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver.

Instead of the typical viewing angle - i.e., looking up at the statue on its base from the ground - Ms. Young flips it and presents an overhead perspective on the coin that creates a wonderful view looking down at the angel as she takes a fallen soldier to heaven. The perspective is terrific and the coin looks great (IMO).

For those who are curious about Ms. Young.

She is an illustrator in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has designed a number of coins for the RCM. Here's a link to her web site page that illustrates her previous designs: Pandora Young Coin Designs

Unfortunately for me, the 10-ounce silver coin's issue price of $1,000 takes it well beyond what I am willing to spend on modern NCLT silver coinage. If the RCM offers the design on a SD later this year, however, I will be a quick buyer! (I would even be willing to break my SD habit and go for a larger one-ounce 38mm coin!)

@commems

I completely agree, this coin is the stand out from the April release but, like you $1,000 is a bit rich for my blood, especially for 10 oz of silver. I usually lament that RCM NCLT silver drops to 1.5 - 2x melt value in a couple of years but in this case, I am hoping for that though with a mintage of 750, it may retain the initial price for a bit longer.

I believe the First World War is a big theme for RCM this year. And more coins will be released. Most likely, a silver dollar with the same - but less detailed - design, will be released.

I love this detailed design.

I noticed the coin has two major adjustments for "Angel of Victory".

First of all, the soldier has long hair on the coin, but short hair in the statue.

Secondly, in the statue, the angel is holding a wreath in her left hand. On the coin, it seems to be a flower (rose?).

Anyone knows why the adjustments were made?

I don't know why the adjustments were made other than my interpretation of the wreath/rose was a tie in to the maple leaf wreath that borders the coin in a manner similar to the George V cents from 1918.

I contacted Ms. Young (the coin's designer) and asked about the "missing" wreath.

It turns out that there is variation between the three copies of the statue in terms of what the angel holds in her left hand.

The statue in Montreal (seen in the image above) has a wreath; the statues in Vancouver and Winnipeg feature a sprig of leaves instead of a wreath.

The artist used the Vancouver statue as her reference; it is the closest to her. Hence, the sprig of leaves vs. a full wreath.

Mystery solved.
