1974 D Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC Is Struck On Wrong Planchet Or Damaged Coin?

oyaji New Member United States 46 Posts	Posted 09/04/2018 06:02 am I found this 1974 D LMC which is quite thin compared to the other pennies and it weighs 2.85g. Is this a wrong planchet strike or just a environmental damaged penny. Maybe if I cleaned it with acetone the weight may even lower removing all the grime attached. Report this Post to the Staff

Plus, I hit the penny with some acetone and some interesting features surfaced on the reverse like a clash or doubling? Report this Post to the Staff

That explains the weight loss, and as a note, +/-.13gr is the listed "tolerances", although I would say.3gr is in a normal range. Sins the rim is still intact, this is most likely a coin buried or spent time in a puddle in the southern US, very acidic soil. If the rim is gone, some missing, that shows a bath in acid.
