Kind of an orange peel look to this one. Mint mark is difficult to make out. Would this be a proof gone bad? D or S?

I'm assuming post mint damage.

No, it's not a Proof. Just a normal, heavily damaged Business Strike. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD). Value is only face value now.

The rim is present, so I'm learning more so as a torched coin. Heated excessively. Nothing during the striking process affected this coin, it was altered in circulation. PSD

Definitely not a mint error - post minting damage ( PMD).

I now wonder if somebody tried to gold-plate it. It is more like gold (gold leaf) than copper/zinc/bronze.
