I hope you own an armored truck onejinx, $500,000 of halves/quarters/dimes would weigh 10 tons no problem.

I'm with Auld Farte, I would go for a complete, uncirculated 18th and 19th Type set, including Gold if the money would stretch. Oh man would that be a cool set? (Good thing dreaming doesn't cost anything eh?)

I'd like to see the looks on their faces at any bank if someone tried to deposit $500K worth of (circulating) coins!  Sixty 500-ct. Green boxes of A.S.E.'s would weigh just a little bit over an (avoirdupois) ton, and would be no problem to transport with a full-size SUV, pickup or trailer.  500 slabbed 1-oz. American Gold Eagles (or pre-'34 gold coins) could fit into the trunk of a regular car. And you could take those to any large bullion dealer and get a cashier's check or funds transfer ( especially right now with the physical gold/silver bullion coin shortages!). Edited by DNA

Just think of what you can add to your collection, and save for a true rainy day.

Modern American Eagle bullion coins might be considered 'cheating' if the will was intended that you buy collector coins,  , then again some of those are indisputably collector's coins (ASE's = 2006 Reverse Proof, 2008-W with '07 reverse, 1995-W Proof, etc.). $500K of pre-1934 U.S. Gold Coins would not at all be a 'cheat' on a will's intention that you buy 'collector coins' It would be the easiest and fastest way to spend the money and get true collector's coins. You or I could walk into a large coin show with $500K and buy those coins in a couple of hours! |

I'd probably go for a type set MS-64 including gold. I think that that would be about 500,000 but could be wrong.
