1951 Lincoln Error - Coin Community Forum

BJ Neff Pillar of the Community United States 526 Posts	Posted 11/23/2008 09:08 am Unfortunately, this is not an error coin, nor is it a variety die. It is simply a mint mark that was placed close to one of the middle digits of the date. As of late, some auctions on E-bay may lead one to believe that this type placement of the mint mark commands a substantial premium. While it is a mild curiosity, this is not rare or even a scarce event, with multiple examples happening. The mint mark being very near or touching a date's digit may have a small following of those who desire to collect such and the pricing of these curiosities should be in line with that. A more rare event is the mint mark that is inverted, with only 8 dies found throughout the entire coinage of the United States with this type error and only one, the 1946-S Lincoln Cent with inverted ball serif(trumpet tail),in the cent series. Being close to date is something to avoid but happened on many dies, but when they are missed punched over the mint mark it gets attention.
