As much as I would like to believe that he is being sincere and just does not know enough about coins, I get that "poorly scripted infomercial" feeling after reading it.

If the buyer would read the description they should know it's not real. Quote: up for bid is a1909 s vdb coin
that was sent out to be certified
by anacs
coin was returned not graded
but given n9 which in anacs terms
is not gradeable possible altered coin He says it was sent to ANACS and returned and possibly altered. The services will not flatly state that a coin is fake, they say "possibly" altered, or "questionable" authenticity. But if they say that you know it is no good. Yes the wishy washy language of the seller will give him an out when the buyer finds out that he spent way too much for a fake, but if he READ the part of the description I quoted he should have known it was no good. But the auction was full of red flags, if he didn't read it and chose to just engage in wishful thinking he has no one to blame but himself.

Dang I have one of them that I would GLADLY sell for $265.00. Holy Cow. Maybe I should ebay it with something like, Ya I knows its an added S MM, but it would be a great hole filler for a fraction of the price of a real one. I dont even have to claim that it was sent to ANACS.. Purchases in 1979 as real but... ITS NOT... Whatcha think gang?

i think the guy was straight up, the buyers just got desperate and didn't do research. if he really wanted to sell it as the real deal he could have just posted some blurry pics and he would have gotten a thousand bucks. his auction started at only 99 cents.
the buyer probably will sell it as the real deal and double or triple his money that's the really sad part.

Believe me, someone will find a way to add a MM, take off a MM, change a date, artificially tone, dip, whiz, spit on for a shine (yuk), etc, etc, etc..... They're waiting for P.T. Barnum's friend, one of the ones born every minute.

Where do you get the S mintmark to add to the P mint coin? Attaching it to the new coin would be easy, finding something that wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb would be difficult.

This is the 18th probable altered 1909 S VDB that I've seen on ebay in the last 3 months.

His starting price is 0.99 cents. So many collectors are willing to buy fake coins for fillers at a price depending on their budget. In this case if this is authentic coin with altered MM then you give a bit higher buying budget. Maybe my budget is $20 so I would definetly bid for it, but then another guy comes with a budget higher than me, and the bid goes on and on, until the guy who has a bigger budget wins.

I know of a jeweler who makes this and is very good at it. He changes an authentic 1903s 1 peso US Philippines to 1906s a very rare date. He sells it as altered date.
