I bought this New Orleans half eagle at a show several years ago and thought it was a no-problem AU example. At least, under the show lights I didn't see any problems. However, I later discovered the bright patch of cleaned surface in the left obverse field. My obverse photo really makes the problem obvious; in-hand it's much harder to see.
I've kicked myself for not noticing this at the time, but I can consider it a learning experience. When contemplating a purchase, be sure to check the entire coin on both sides for evidence of cleaning. You may be willing to buy a cleaned coin, but you want to know about the defect before you plunk down your cash. You may also be able to negotiate a better price if you can point out the problem to the seller.
