This is really neat looking. Oxidation got to a bit of it. Never seen one but soon as I saw this, saw RED and I just knew its clad layer. Its is right?
A missing clad is dark red, because of the copper center layer: Because of the missing clad, the strike is also weaker because the thickness of the planchet is reduced: Partial cladding color and how the strike is affected after the cladding comes off:
Struck missing clad, pre-strike: Acid dipped to remove cladding: Again note the red color, not brown or a stain color. Outdoor find compared with a missing clad area for color differences.
Environmental tarnishing/staining/damage. Cause could be a million things, from cup holder to have been buried in acidic soil for part of it's life, or even heat or chemical damage. Not a mint error, just PMD.
