Quote: He offered me $450... This alone makes me feel more comfortable about its authenticity. If authentication is your goal, I would sent to ANACS (seems to me they are the easiest for average collectors to use). It is what I would do, because I would then crack it to put into my Dansco. This is just my opinion, your mileage may vary. (For the record, I have never sent a coin in for grading, so do seek additional opinions.)

Any idea how long your dad had it put away? If it's been quite a while I would think the family provenance alone would go a long way to supporting it being authentic.

I agree with jBuck. If you just want it authenticated Anacs is as good and much cheaper than the others.

I remember coin collecting with him as far back as 45 years ago....he always said "good find...put it in the book"....lol.... so it has been quite a while. My brother is going to send me the rest of his coin jars filled with Indian head and wheat pennies along with "the books. He stored many of his random coins in the old paper wrappers ... I will be very busy for quite some time. Thanks again everyone ... I will try to hunt a dealer down that is willing to send it in..if not I will wait until I have at least 4 to send in and Join. Stay Well All!

@Zurie
Thanks for that fascinating referral for study! Sadly, it raises severe concern in me over @ABS's coin. The D. and B. seem a dire mismatch with the image and the descriptive text in the publication.
@jbuck,
Your humble know-nuttin' servant, Kevin thinks a little less comfort may be in order on that dealer offer. This could simply mean the dealer believes that "as is" he could turn $450 into a quick grand and take a tax loss if the coin ever came back.
It's a beautiful temptation "as is", methinks. Me? After following @Zuries re-direction I'd go back and get the 450.
Kevin

Quote: I don't recommend this. Neither do I. That leaves too much meat on the bone if it is authentic. Also, in deference to Kevin's opinion on its authenticity (his absolute right to give), I could not sleep if I knowingly sold a fake for $450. Moral issues aside, it could also come back to bite you. For me, the best play is sending it to ANACS or visiting a TPG booth at a coin show (once they are safely open).

Quote: I don't recommend this. Thank you, @nss! I'm sorry I wrote that! My bent was to pass the vexation to a professional in the industry to manage. I do not -- for one millisecond -- question the wisdom you offer, but I would love to understand the major forces that underlie that wisdom. Honesty, ethics? Compassion for the next buyer? Respect for the hobby? All are valid in my book. Did you have other(s) in mind? Kevin

Quote: Honesty, ethics? Compassion for the next buyer? Respect for the hobby? All are valid in my book. Agreed. Your opinion means I have to give more thought to my reasoning. So, I feel better about the coin once he made an offer, but still do not feel the best. In other words, this and the other opinions of the members have me feeling the TPG cost has less risk than the typical find we have posted here.

I also would not knowingly sell a fake. It would be unethical, and it would keep a counterfeit coin in "circulation". Your coin dealer seems reputable. Although I believe the coin is not genuine, I still believe it's worth a trip to a TPG to confirm.

I have heard good things about the dealer OP took the coin to, also they had the ability to see the coin in hand, as opposed to pictures. Seeing as you're also in south florida, I would use this link ( https://www.PCGS.com/dealers) if you have not already, to find a dealer who can send it in for you.

how exciting! I hope for you that it turns out to be genuine. it looks like the real thing to me, but I'm not anywhere close to being an 'expert' on it. to me the wear looks authentic, and a few other things point toward authentic, but that doesn't mean it is. I agree with everyone above: take your sweet time & continue the quest for authentication. good luck to you!
