So I found a silver War Nickel, which is cool. It's in fairly rough shape but there is damage that I don't fully understand in the form of cracks around the mint mark and on Jefferson's cheek, mouth and head. Any insights?

I'm thinking lamination issues--have seen them on War Nickels before.

It is affected on both sides. But hay, there was a war going on then. But the silver mix and copper mix seemed to have issues with lamination issues on them.

More information on lamination and ghost images? :

Even more information with lots of images of stuff you've probably never thought of before?

Thank you. Now that I know what to look for (lamination error) I'm coming across all sorts of information.

Very nice find @koin. This is worthy of storage in a 2x2.

Thanks, everyone. On the subject of coin holders/flips, do you have any recommendations?

I prefer the 2X2's. But if you buy the plastic flips, avoid the soft plastic ones. They will contaminate BU coin with PVC damage. Get the hard plastic flips, not the soft plastic. This also applies to the square tubes. The soft plastic ones can be used for circulated coins, but will alter the color on the BU coins. But the hard square tubes will not turn the color on BU coins and are the better purchase.
