Mechanical Doubling does not wear off. It is more a less a "smearing" of the devices by loose dies. The affected devices appear thinner and the doubling is like yours - flat and shelf-like. Please research MD here on this forum for graphics etc.

On the doubled eye, it is raised, not flatten. You are seeing as mentioned already Machine Doubling. This also occurred on the 1955-D DDO cent:
Wheat-Cent-Double-Eye-Lid-And-Mouth?
Also note, that it is not flattened, but raised as it is hub doubling, not Machine Doubling.
Wheat-Cent-Double-Eye-Lid-And-Mouth?
Note all the other hub doubling s also showing a spread:
Wheat-Cent-Double-Eye-Lid-And-Mouth?
Note also on the 1942 DDO the affected areas are raised:

Enlarged eye, showing spread, compared with an example of Machine Doubling.
Another one with the raised eye lid. Machine Doubling removes contour, a doubled die has contour on the devices. Hope this helps.
