Remember this coin would have bought a lot more in its day than any one modern coin. So only one of the old coins went a long way towards basic needs daily. A more modern example is that US Barber and early Walking Liberty halves are normally pretty worn down from usage. Back then .50 was a lot of money compared with today. So carrying one or two was no big deal in older times. But when .50 started to be worth a lot less, the number of heavier coins needed daly increased and people stopped carrying/using them.
