Hey yall, new here and this is my first post. I'm also relatively new to coin collecting so I appreciate any info I can learn from anyone with more knowledge than me. That being said, I have what I believe to be a 2008 Hawaii P quarter with a thin clad layer missing on the obverse with stronger areas in the hair on top of the head, and large parts on the reverse. Can anyone tell me if I'm right or what yalls opinions are on the matter? Also, does anyone have any idea on value? Thanks for looking!
I'm sure others will air their views, but to me this just looks like staining. The coin may have spent a while lying in a car cup holder or a similar environment. Coins with missing clad typically have weaker strikes as the planchet is thinner than normal.
It looks like surface toning or staining. The image below show a Roosevelt dime with a cladding error (and a misspelling by PCGS) and exposure of the copper core. I would expect your coin to look more like this if the clad layer was missing in places.
