Back in 1993, the US Mint released a three-coin set to honor World War II; I've posted about the half dollar coin from the set previously (check out the "US Modern Commemoratives" link within Commems Collection). The set also included a 0.900 fine silver dollar designed by Thomas D. Rogers and struck at the West Point Mint facility. The coin is dual-dated "1991-1995" to honor the period of official US engagement in World War II. 1991-95 (1993) US World War II Commemorative Silver Dollar The coin's obverse design presents a US soldier on the beach at Normandy France during the D-Day landing; the reverse "features the shoulder sleeve insignia of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force and a quote from General Eisenhower's D-Day message to the troops." {US Mint) The Silver Dollar had a total mintage of 449,281, split between 342,041 proof coins and 107,240 Uncirculated. France also issued a silver commemorative coin in honor of D-Day. I've posted before about the 0.900 fine silver French One Franc D-Day commemorative coin that parallels the US silver dollar of the 1993 World War II set; you can read a bit about it here: 1993 Battle of Normandy Set. I've had this associated piece in my collection for quite some time, but haven't previously posted it. It is a Philatelic-Numismatic Cover (PNC) produced by Fleetwood and features a pair of French commemorative stamps in addition to the France One Franc coin. The stamps on the cover were cancelled on June 4, 1994 and June 6, 1994 (D-Day). You can read about the stamps featured on the cover - and their dates of cancellation - on the back of the PNC in the image below. 1994 France D-Day Philatelic-Numismatic Cover For other of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, including other World War II commemorative coin stories, see: Commems Collection. (After an extended hospital stay, I'm trying to regain my full ability to contribute here on CCF. It will take some time, but I'll keep plugging away! Please bear with me!) Quote: It will take some time, but I'll keep plugging away! So glad to have you back @commems! I wonder, are these sorts of combo coin/stamp first day of issue packages heavily collected? As an outside observer, it seems like a niche within a niche market.

Quote: I wonder, are these sorts of combo coin/stamp first day of issue packages heavily collected? In short, No! Only a small group of collectors currently pursue PNCs and the number is down from 20-30 years ago. I have a few dozen in my collection, but have never considered myself a hardcore collector of them. The ones I have purchased have served as interesting supplements to my core collections.

Welcome Back, commems!! So good to have you back. Quote: I wonder, are these sorts of combo coin/stamp first day of issue packages heavily collected? Quote: In short, No! Seems like a good opportunity to amass a collection on the cheap! I personally like them (and this one that commems has featured is a fine example) but to date I have only collected the Statehood & Territory PNCs and the Presidential dollar PNCs. I may have one or two others somewhere in my collection. Again, very glad to have you back, commems!
