Hi there.. I'm trying to figure out if this is a wide-date as well as a wide-0. The obverse does not seem to have as much die wear as Charlton's suggests there is supposed to be on this variety.     I am leaning toward designating it the wide-date&wide-0 but the obverse is throwing me a bit. Opinions? |

wide date-Wide zero- Die Deterioration in IA of Gratia. see charlton 2009, page 395. could be the die problem is a bit more than just in Gartia.... HHB |

Sorry I meant to say this earlier, as well.. the picture in here (Charltons) *is* stated as a late stage die, and that it's a progressive obverse die variety. I was also gently reminded this morning that wear can play a factor, especially when there is this much of it. So while I could probably talk myself into it being this variety, I would feel better to have concurring opinions from those more knowledgeable than I  |

Hi, I'm unfamiliar with the 10c varieties, but I'll try. I don't have the 2009 Charlton's so I cannot comment there, but I see this in Charest's book:  To my eyes, the date on your coin looks closer to the "wide 0" variety. I'm just guessing this is a wider date punch used to date this die?  |

I believe this would be wide date, wide O as well. Even if not as much die wear as expected, it may be an early state die used for this particular coin. Die wear had to start somewhere right? That's a good picture too Kurt. I need to start really checking out my charest. I downloaded but never found time to get much further into it.

I may have to kill a (small) tree and print out some pertinent pages of the Charest. Charlton's gives a picture of the entire reverse, with closeups of just the date and then the ' Die Deterioration' closeup on the obverse. I was looking at the placement of the 1, and the 0 between the N and T of CENTS. (Sorry about the horrible cell-phone pictures - my camera battery is charging and my backup must have hid from me. You can at least see the placement of the digits.) Narrow date - notice placement under CENTS and above leaf:  Wide date:  Overlay with Wide-date from Kurt's pic:  Thank you both! My first real in-person (and blind haha) cherry-pick!  |

 I don't feel this coin is of any variety, except the Narrow "0". Coin has been hashly cleaned, gouged on the Obverse, and worn to the point of being a "fair" grade at best rendering it of no collector value!  Glenn |

Wide 0 has a wider right side of the '0' than left, which this coin has. It definitely has scratches, but I also WAY amped up contrast and sharp in order to bring out the details. It's spent lots of time in circulation, which is awesome and adds character. I don't need MS60 in every coin  |
