Yeah, I think everybody is right. I paged through the PDF file again. The nickel reverse die example on p.36 does look just like these two nickels.

I should add: if these coins would be helpful to Pete's ongoing studies of Feeder Finger Damage, I am happy to put them in an envelope and donate them to the cause.

Two nickels that I recently found.

Thanks for posting! I will add these to my census! I have no doubt that they are feeder mechanism die scrapes!

I appreciate your offer to send! I think your photos will be adequate for my purposes.

I will keep my eye out. I do check all 1990s nickels for full steps prior to wrapping.

When you say "prior to 2000", do you really mean 1938-2000 or is there a lower bound to the range?

Since I have no way to guess whether or not a feeder mechanism will leave die scrapes, I have no way to provide a "terminus a quo" date.

Ok, I will pay attention for FFD on all nickel dates, then.

Found a couple nickels in this latest batch that might have FFD.

My pleasure.

I did keep an eye out when I checked the 1990-1999 nickels for full steps. Nothing to report there.

In the course of identifying doubled dies, I ran across this listing. It appears to have pretty ferocious FFD across the whole reverse.

I picked this nickel up on ebay for five bucks. Here's a 1998-P nickel with strong FFD on the reverse. Now you have a pre-2000 example. =)
