1941-D Lincoln Cent "struck Through Grease " ?

uruman Pillar of the Community United States 5193 Posts	Posted 12/22/2025 09:41 am it's been worth for me to go back and check my searching finds from decades ago , I had these coin labeled as Struck Through Grease but I decided to weight it and found that it weights 2.4 grs , so it may have been struck on a thin rolled planchet maybe ? The stark contrast between the "LI" and the rest of LIBERTY sure looks like a grease issue. In going through several thousand of the 1941 Philadelphia cents, I am seeing quite a few tapered planchets, but nothing as thin as your coin. Both the 1940 and 1941 cents from all three mints have a high number of woodies and laminations, as well. I wonder where the three mints obtained their rolled bronze sheets in those years? Was it rolled in Philadelphia and shipped by rail or did all three mints roll/purchase their own stock? Report this Post to the Staff
