One of the things I love about dealing in coins is that I get to handle, albeit sometimes briefly, a lot of coins I haven't handled yet.

We acquired a 1809 Half Dollar (lettered edge)and it was described as R-1, O-102.

I am not familiar with overton varieties, how common is this one? All the ones I saw on ebay (the ones that looked to be on the level lol) were O-106 or 109 ... can someone enlighten me a bit, for my benefit as well as our dear readers at home?

Best

R-1 describes the rarity. 1 being among the most common.

Just for curiosity's sake, what symbols are located on the edge between DOLLAR and FIFTY?

None, just a small triangle between "fifty cents" & "or half dollar". It's the most common of the two breen varieties (the other being the one with ||| or xxx). Thanks for your interest!

Bruce

EDIT: Is there any good cource on the internet on the overton die varities? Or do I need his book, lol already have Breen. Another book? Gaaaa lolol

There's nothing on the Internet as complete as Overton's own work. That's one book I open almost every day.
