Here I have an Austrailian silver (in colour) threepence dated 1951. What grade would you put on this coin and an approximate value please? On the front underneath the bust are the intials, MP or HP? On the rear within the 4 corners of the scroll are the letters K-P-G-L
I'd grade it at gVF, perhaps EF. The latest "Maccas Guide" to Australian coins puts it at AU$2 in EF. Yes, it is made of silver (.500 fine); all Australian predecimal "silver" coins are actually made of silver.
"KG" are the initials of British coin designer George Kruger Gray; his initials also appear on British and other Imperial coinage designed in the 1950's. These initials appear on all our "wheatsheaf" threepences.
"PL" is the mintmark used on Australian coins from the early 1950's that were struck in London. "PL" derives from the the Latin "pecunia londinium" (money of London) and the "PLON" mintmark used on ancient Roman coins struck in that city.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
