I bought a lot of generic silver dollars which contained the usual mix of circulated common Morgans and 1922 and 1923 Peace dollars. There were quite a few decent New Orleans coins but nothing special, except for this one:

1888-O-Hot-Lips-Morgan

1888-O-Hot-Lips-Morgan

The "Hot Lips" variety is actually a doubled obverse die error. Doubling is noticeable not only on the lips but especially on the upper maple leaves in Miss Liberty's hair. Although it's not a high-value coin in circulated grade I was happy to find it!

Very nice! I still don't have one yet. They are very difficult to "cherry-pick" because the doubling is so prominent that there are usually many bidders at auction close.

When you say
Quote:
Although it's not a high-value coin in circulated grade
. You underestimate its popularity. That doubling adds 10x value over a similar grade 88-O without doubling. This variety remains extremely popular with the Morgan collectors despite the high number of extent pieces.

SeatedNut,
Thanks for the input on value. I had looked in my 2008 Red Book and it showed a modest value of $35 for the Hot Lips VAM-4 in VF-20. A quick check of Heritage shows slabbed coins in VF-35 and EF-40 selling in the $250 to $375 range. My coin looks every bit as good as those ANACS and NGC-slabbed examples in the auction archives. Cool!

I suppose if I wanted to sell it I would maximize my return by having it graded and attributed. I'm content to keep it raw for now!

I don't believe this one needs to go into a slab to increase resale value. The attribution is kinda easy (), and it's not Mint State. Relatively common as they go, but very popular, very collectible, and very liquid as a result.

I included this coin in my recent ANACS submission. The posted grade on their website is EF-45 which is a bit higher than I expected. I'll post a photo of the slabbed coin after I get it back.

If you hadn't have repeated that, I would have asked if you did not make a typo with the grade..... My guess would have been Fine..... but then... well....

I am a bit confused... Did you get the VAM attribution on the holder? This is why I ask... There have been evil mimics of this VAM. (at least we have seen photos of the mimics) 2 things bug me about this... they are

1. The chin is VERY doubled on a VAM-4... in these photos, I do not see the chin doubling. (which is something you almost always see with the evil mimics)

2. The mint mark does not look to be in the right position for a VAM-4. (could just be dirt/light/photo in general or something)

If the attribution is on the holder, ok its a VAM-4... I trust ANACS attributions above all others. Otherwise, lets turn it into a learning thread with these 2 questions starting. Please note, that this is just an opinion, and I am just asking questions.

I see plenty of reason that this could be/is a VAM-4, but having been tricked by a mimic in the past, I look at them MUCH closer now.

Below is a pic of a VAM-4 "Hot Lips" Note the doubling on the chin and how prominent it is.

Remmy... I will pull the one I have out and put up a photo. I went though 3 of my boxes to send in some coins and the 3 boxes are no longer in order LOL so it could take a few hours

With the vast amount of highly interesting coins that you have Russ, I imagine these "boxes" weighing about 700-800 pounds each.

It is a VAM 4 doubled cotton bowls and all. The mm has a little PMD coming off the ribbon that is making the mm look wrong.

ANACS agrees, VAM-4. There is some luster remaining around the letters, so apparently it qualifies as EF-45. The new ANACS is supposed to be tough on grades. I figured it had a good shot at EF-40; what do you think?
