Grade/Value An Abused 1859 Gold Dollar

trdhrdr007 Pillar of the Community United States 2335 Posts	Posted 02/03/2011 4:13 pm I got this gold dollar in a ring from a lot of gold jewelry I bought for resale. The obverse was showing, the reverse was backed by a gold "washer" that was held in with prongs. When I took it apart it became apparent to me that at one time this coin had been soldered into a different piece of jewelry. The coin weighs 1.7 grams on my scale & appears authentic. The wife got a new camera for Xmas that isn't as user friendly as the one she dropped in a creek so I'm posting 4 pics, 2 obverse & 2 reverse. The pictures aren't the greatest but I think they show the condition of the coin fairly well.....polished & scratched on the obverse & solder on the reverse. I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of a net grade & approximate value. These pics show the solder & a darker spot in the center of the reverse caused by the coin being backed with a gold washer which left the center exposed on the underside of the ring. Since there's almost $70 of gold in it, iowaguy's $80 to $100 estimate sounds close and it does look authentic. It should be 15mm in diameter and the weight at 1.7g is correct. Considering that it's value is based pretty much entirely on the gold content, the actual grade does not matter, but I would say EF detais, ex jewelery. Report this Post to the Staff

I checked the Red Book for mintage & saw that the C or D mints carried a substantial premium. I knew the odds were aginst it but that didn't stop me from hoping. Report this Post to the Staff
