OK I did not read the manual... Yes I know I probably should have How do set the white balance in zoom browser? Apart from that this camera has blown me away already its so far ahead of anything I have ever used.  |

Heh. Yer all done now.  You're going to want to set a Custom white balance. With Canon dSLR's, that involves physically shooting a white/grey card under the actual lighting, and saving that shot to the memory card. You can then designate that as the "official" white balance shot. I don't want to go through actual menu steps, because your 550D may be different from my 450D. Furthermore, you *may* be able to do it through Zoom Browser, but I formed my Custom white balance habits pre-Zoom Browser so I am not sure. I've found a few layers of white printer paper to work just as well as 18% grey for custom white balance. Like most Canons, the "Tungsten" white balance setting is always a little yellow; "Auto" is usually better under tungsten. |

It still seems the tiniest bit red; not enough to drastically affect the appearance of the coin which looks pretty darn good, but enough to affect the background which is the first place I look (yeah, I'm anal ). You have equipment which is quite capable of erasing that very minor anomaly. Call it a goal for your learning curve. |

I like the white sheet better then the grey sheet. Perhaps an offwhite sheet is a happy median?

Now you understand why I say that, with coins, it's more about the equipment than the photographer. Richard, which of the last two are more faithful to the true color under the same light? I suspect it's somewhere between the two images; perhaps the same setup as the last pic, with a slightly slower exposure to "brighten" the image, might get you in that direction. |

This is as close as I can come to the actual colour of the coin and the overall look. I'm sorry its rotated a bit but I don't know how to rotate by degrees in Gimp. The other issue I have is the Computer screen is behind the camera and I am viewing it through the lights. I will have to make some modifications to my desk to accommodate this new set up.  |

Well, now you have opened a wonderful new world for yourself. Photography is a great pursuit and, as you have now learned,it dovetails nicely with coin collecting. You've made a great start, my friend, and we are looking forward to great things in the future. No pressure!
