http://cgi.ebay.com/1913-Buffalo-Ni...em41586ec994I understand toning adds to value (whether you agree it should or not), but to what point? Someone let me know how you would break this coin down... Coin Value: $200 - $250 Grade with "+" Designation: $100 - $200? Toning: (If this coin sells for the asking price) $1600 Let me say this... This seller is usually very fair in her pricing. I've dealt with her many a time and her coins are usually priced lower than other peoples. So - how much is she going out on a limb here to get her asking price? And lastly - can we at least agree that this toning is beautiful? At least in the picture.

I know I could look it up, but is your value of $200 -$250 for a MS66? What is the price difference between MS66 and MS67? I've seen a lot of dealers price a '+' grade as if it were the next grade up.

That's interesting... There is a massive price jump at 67. You could probably justify $800+ for a 67 grade.

If she is pricing the 66+ as if it were 67 I'd say that's part of her thinking.
At $900 for a 67, I think she's really stretching it by doubling the overall price for toning.
Overpriced IMHO. But who knows... some people will buy just about anything on impulse.

When I was at my last coin show - I spoke with a dealer about Toned Morgans for about 30 minutes. He said that he had no problem getting 8x value for some of his examples. He told me that he actually has fully directed his business to toned Morgan's because of the profit he could turn.
My guess is that if you can get 8x what a coins worth - you don't have to sell them that often to do well. I do feel like toned Morgans are much more popular that toned nickels though.

She's looking for a pigeon. They're out there. I don't know that I wouldn't do the same thing on a coin like this one.

It could just be me but I think that's pretty extreme - and I love toned coins. While a 67 is a big jump, this one obviously did not make a 67. You can't price on what a small jump up would mean unless it really looks like without a doubt the coin was undergraded. Note, if it was that close to a 67, with that sort of toning they'd at least have given it a star. Plus, it's still quite the premium from there. I'm not by any means a Buffalo nickel expert, but I can't imagine this going for more than $750 or so. The Morgans that trade for 8x have insane carnival colors - bright greens and magentas that completely cover at least one side of the coin.

mshev - the ones he was selling (morgans) are exactly as you described. Some even had the canvas toning on just the face, not th entire obverse. He had a stunning collection.
I too thought this was a little extreme, just wanted to see if my thinking was correct. I'd still love to hear other opinions too.

Yep, overpriced in my opinion.

Non-Star 66's are sub-$200 coins at Heritage. I'd call this, um, a tad overpriced even considering the beautiful color.

IMHO, I tend to stay away from toned coins. A truly natural toning is fine, but many coins have been artificially toned to cover or at least to help cover problems.

lukky - We probably saw the same dealer. There were several with a good stock of toned coins, but one had some that were particularly nice (and expensive).

And it's not even a strong strike... I thought weak strikes rarely went past 64 or 65...

mshev - it was pretty much as soon as you walked through the door. He actually only had about 15-20 toned Morgan's. He showed me a few that he was asking $25k for. I'll have to look for his business card. He said his website had a lot of information about toning for me to read on. Real nice guy.

Granted it is a very high grade Buffalo with a superstar rating, and this seller is making a great profit on a very nice coin BUT where do you get off charging $17.50 for shipping a coin. Are they not making enough profit on the sale What are they going to hand deliver it in their Rolls Royce I think the seller is a rip off, and they will take someone for everything they can get away with
