I have recently came across this very old coin. I've been doing some research and I believe that it is called a bust libery eagle coin. My questions is how much is this coin worth? I know that the value depends on the condition or the grade of the coin, could someone tell me of a website or a book that I could research in order to get an accurate value for this coin. I don't know very much about rare coins, so any suggestions would be welcome, thank you.   |

This is a very rare coin! as a matter of fact, I can't recall ever seeing draped bust gold owned by forum members here on this forum, so no denying it's rarity. The $10 pieces are tougher. The damage is severe, but with the rarity it should still be worth at least 2-3K. If the coin were problem free and certified, it would retail between 10K and 15K. It needs to be authenticated, but first you should check the weight and dimensions, should be at 16.7 grams approximately. It looks to have XF details.

I agree with XF Details too John. I second that it should be authenticated. I would go with PCGS, NGC, or ANACS.

That's worth in the neighborhood of 10K-if its real. BTW, is it just me or are the stars supposed to be more like the ones in the RedBook ex.? I'm comparing it to the one in the RB. 2011 on pg259, the 1799, or are the stars supposed to be like that? I've heard that many old dies produced different stars depending on the wear on the die. My question: does it look right? |

Diagnostically, it appears genuine. Yes, NO pawn shops or even coin shops yet. If you are planning on selling it, get it certified first, then I would go with a reputable auction house.

That's a WOW-99 in my book. Lowest price for one on ebay right now is $15,500 for ANACS AU 58 Altered Surfaces. Found a value of $10.500 listed for condition F. Not sure what that amount of damage does to the value, but the advice above is good...you'll maximize the value for sale or heirs by getting it graded. Wild guess, $7000 retail. |

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to get it certified and then I will sell it. As many of you asked where I got it, my grandpa used to collect coins from all over the world and last week my dad gave me the coin collection as a gift.

ANACS should be sufficient for the authentication. Depending on where you sell it, PCGS would probably net you a little more money in the end. They will not grade the coin, just authenticate it. ANACS will provide a net grade.

Susan, good idea goign with the grading. I would agree to send it into PCGS. In hopes they will authenticate it. For a coin of this rariety it will be of good value. Please let us know if you have more questions. Kepp us posted with the results please. Thanks

Sorry for not updating about the coin. I was planning of getting the coin authenticated but it took me a while to find a coin shop where I could get it done. When I went the guy there told me that I could get it authenticated but it would not make too much financial sense to do that, his reason was that my coin's damage was too severe. He said it was better for me to sell it to him or another person that is a coin collector. I tried shopping the coin around and they all say that the coin is too damaged, they are offering between $800-950. They said if the coin was in better condition it would be worth a couple of thousand more. Any suggestions? Should I sell it now or keep it?
