Diagnostically, it appears genuine. Yes, NO pawn shops or even coin shops yet. If you are planning on selling it, get it certified first, then I would go with a reputable auction house.

That's a WOW-99 in my book.
Lowest price for one on ebay right now is $15,500 for ANACS AU 58 Altered Surfaces.
Found a value of $10.500 listed for condition F.
Not sure what that amount of damage does to the value, but the advice above is good...you'll maximize the value for sale or heirs by getting it graded. Wild guess, $7000 retail.

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to get it certified and then I will sell it. As many of you asked where I got it, my grandpa used to collect coins from all over the world and last week my dad gave me the coin collection as a gift.

Looks okay by me, but I never saw one in person.
Please let us know the results of the grading.

ANACS should be sufficient for the authentication. Depending on where you sell it, PCGS would probably net you a little more money in the end. They will not grade the coin, just authenticate it. ANACS will provide a net grade.

Susan, good idea goign with the grading. I would agree to send it into PCGS. In hopes they will authenticate it. For a coin of this rariety it will be of good value. Please let us know if you have more questions. Kepp us posted with the results please. Thanks

Sorry for not updating about the coin. I was planning of getting the coin authenticated but it took me a while to find a coin shop where I could get it done. When I went the guy there told me that I could get it authenticated but it would not make too much financial sense to do that, his reason was that my coin's damage was too severe. He said it was better for me to sell it to him or another person that is a coin collector. I tried shopping the coin around and they all say that the coin is too damaged, they are offering between $800-950. They said if the coin was in better condition it would be worth a couple of thousand more. Any suggestions? Should I sell it now or keep it?

SusanTX: The dealer you took it to was trying to take you for a ride, as was anyone else offering $900.

You can submit the coin to ANACS for authentication without a membership.

A cleaned, tooled, ex-jewelry (also bent) 1801 G$10 with EF40 Details sold for $3,450 on Heritage Auctions in 2007.

If you need submission advice, feel free to ask. You have a $4,000 coin if genuine.

I agree with BH I would not except anything under 2500 for it. If I had the cash, I'd probably offer that to you for it if it gets slabbed as genuine.

, SusanTX!

Those offers are around bullion value ($890.44), which you should be able to get at any time.

If you choose to get it certified, it will almost certainly get a details grade (like it has xf details, but is damaged), or no grade, just a label saying it's genuine. I'd use ANACS.

If it was mine, I'd send it to Stockton: http://www.crs-stockton.com/ , especially if I wanted to keep it as a family heirloom. He has a 1798 with before and after pix.

Experts can detect repairs, and I'm not sure how TPG handle repaired coins.

Rachums-

There is no way that's a $10,000 coin. Unslobbed and damaged, I'd guess $2000 to be much more realistic.

Unbelievable find susan - definitely something I would love to add to my collection despite the damage. Its disappointing to see that a dealer only offered you bullion value for something which holds significant numismatic value. If I were you, I would get it slabbed immediately (ANACS is probably best) too authenticate it. Once authenticated, I would take look into consigning it too a major auction house (stacks, heritage etc) because you could probably get more for it at auction than via a dealer. There are some old coins which should be sold to a dealer and some which should be sent straight to auction - in my opinion, this coin falls into the latter catagory. Congratz on the find!

Please follow the advice you've received here and submit it to ANACS on your own - you will not regret the decision. Congrats on having such an awesome piece of American history passed down to you. I'm in the boat with many others where I wish I had a couple grand right now to offer you for it myself. Once it is graded by ANACS you won't have much trouble doubling the offers you're receiving right now. Maybe even much better in an auction - all it takes is two folks both wanting it in a bidding war!
