I pretty much have it in my system to obtain one of these 1845-P V-5 Repunched Date Half Dimes. Both look really nice, one is from a dealer that I have dealt with, which she is asking quite a bit more than the other. I know, they are not Top III TPG slabbed, but they could be sent in with some other "freed" coins I have. What do you think? Coin "A" or "B"? Both sellers have a thirty-day return policy. B makes me nervous seeing a coin that old that blast white unslabbed. My eyes could also be playing tricks on me making B look whiter than it is after seeing the first one.
Assuming B is problem free I vote for that one

The difference could be the lighting as well...different sellers, different lighting techniques.  Edited by oih82w8

I just don't like the look of "B." Too bright for a slightly-circulated coin, and the reverse pitting bothers me.

I prefer #1.. Always preferred toned to blast white... and olive brown to red...

i do not like how A is ever so slightly off center(even though it is fairly common in most of the seated series) but that mark below I'm on the reverse of B would drive me insane

I'm calling "fake" on B.
I don't know enough (read: next to nothing) about half-dimes, but here is what I see: a coin from 1845 that looks newer than a lot of the 2011 dimes I get in my drawer (by contrast I just did a Google search for this coin and found a PGCS-slabbed MS66 that had that old silver toning on it--this looks even more suspicious to me in that light), has an unusually-pitted reverse, and comparing it to friend Google, something is wrong with the curve of the arm holding the shield (as I see it on Google, that arm should be held closer to the body, not so far out--a matter of millimeters, but it's catching my eye).
I also take issue with the damage on the shield; it could just be photographed in a way that causes this look, but I don't think so: take a look at that ding. Now imagine it whole. There's too much space between the B and the E in LIBERTY.

I could be wrong, especially given that I'm not familiar with this particular coin (although I did have the wonderful opportunity to hold one in-hand, part of a collection one of my coworkers inherited from his grandpa), but usually when it comes to those things that "ping" me . . . we had a thread awhile ago about a Peace dollar that might or might not have been fake and I commented on the shape of the nose, and sure enough, when someone did an overlay, there it was. So, my personal and barely-educated opinion is, it looks "off" to me. Tread lightly and do your research on that one (and by "research" I mean "everything up to and including the return policy!"). |
