I am interested in collecting silver dollars issued by RCM from 1971 to present. I was able to find a nice 1971, 1974 and 1984 coin. I was stupid enough to buy the 1972 coin from a vendor that didi not have the image of the coin on the website. I got it home and was disappointed to find it was never placed in a capsule and had tarnish. Can anyone suggest sources where I can get older coins that have not been tarnished? Thanks

Those commemorative silver dollars tarnish very easy. Most the ones I see have a little tarnish on them. I see them at the LCS for anywhere from 10 to 20 bucks....

During the first few years of it offering NCLT silver dollars, the RCM did not enclose its coins in a capsule. They were inserted into a plastic "frame" and then placed into a clamshell holder.

So, these early coins were exposed to the elements from the start and many developed toning. I wouldn't be too hard on the dealer who sold you the coin as it is very common to see these coins without them being in a capsule.

Without seeing an image of your coin, I can't say how it easy/hard it might be to remove the toning without damaging the coin. Do you have an image you can share?

Use the Reply to Topic Link just above the Quick Reply window instead of doing a Quick reply. Just below the main text field is a link to Upload an Image that will allow you to browse to a picture on your hard drive and upload. Picture must be less than 100K in size though.

It took me a while to find a decent 1972 silver dollar. Harder and harder to find...
