Jefferson Lamination Error - Coin Community Forum

Also, I noticed when I was placing it in a 2X2 that it was slightly smaller than a regular nickel, does this mean anything? KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 07/30/2008 10:55 pm Have you compared the diameter of this nickel to a normal one? I'm guessing this is post-mint damage, where the coin was tumbled in a commercial dryer for a long time. This has been discussed before where the rims get hammered in so much that a layer of metal moves in towards the center of the coin. Report this Post to the Staff
foundinrolls Pillar of the Community United States 3507 Posts	Posted 07/30/2008 11:25 pm Hi, Bingo! It's a " Dryer Coin" and is damaged. Here is a picture of a cent that came out of the fin in a commercial clothes dryer. It was tumbling for months with other coins. Thanks, Bill Report this Post to the Staff

The only reason I though it might be a lamination was due to the ring on the reverse that looked like the center had been torn out. I guess this is just a side effect of the dryer.
