I would call this coin AU50-53. It's of a type known as the Reverse of 1878, characterized by the flat breast and parallel tailfeathers of the eagle. Only about 2% of 1879-S Morgans used this reverse, and your coin is identified as a Top 100 Variety, a very collectible piece. 19 die-pair variant VAM's are known for this type, and the place to start attributing is the "r" in "trust." Here's a good link for the process:

Thanks for the advice and the link. This coin came as part of a job lot of Morgans that I purchased, so I'm well happy

Moe, unfortunately not, I am just enthusiastic fan of the Flying Fortress, with many books and videos on the subject.
