I don't own the coin so these are the only pics I have. The obverse looks weird, it looks like someone cleaned around the liberty head. Any idea what's up with this coin? It straight graded AU

Only a guess but it looks like toning that got close to lady liberty but want able to get closer for some reason. Notice the toning is on lady liberty. My guess is whatever was causing the toning couldn't get into the high points on the obverse.

On Jefferson nickels, it is not unusual for dies with heavy fatigue or PIDT to develop a sunken halo with a different texture immediately around the bust perimeter. I'm not familiar with Peace dollar striking, though. It could be toning as has already been suggested.

I would go with toning, and maybe there was some residual oil on the coin that for the most part was wiped off except for the edges of the design elements protecting it from getting a similar tone like the rest of the coin.
