Ok so I'm not necessarily expecting this to be the real thing but it is a puzzling coin.
I went to a flea market on Sunday and a guy had this box full of old things including some cents. At first I thought this was a 43 steel cent but then I noticed the date: 85 D.
The weight of the coin is 2.5g and the diameter is 19mm.
Any ideas?

Post mint damage. It is easy to strip the copper off of these either intentionally or unintentionally.

Thanks, Pyrbob, I'm sure you're right but is there a way to know for sure this is PMD?
With the coin in hand it's just hard to believe they can do such a perfect job, do you know how they do it?

See the bumps on the coin? These were created by a poor rinse before the copper plating is added to the planchets. If it were an un-plated planchet, they wouldn't be there.

here is what an un-plated cent would look like:

The bumps under the plating on the cents plagued them for several years:

Wow, Coop, thanks a lot, I think that solves it.
Great pictures as usual.

They say an image is worth a thousand words and sometimes only one. Not all my images, I use them for educational purposes. So part of thanks is shared with others who also contributed.

Just a matter of semantics but I would call the cent that has had the copper stripped off after striking to be "Unplated" and a cent struck on a planchet that never had the copper plating as a "non-plated" cent.
