Correct Attribution? - Coin Community Forum

ancientcoinguy Pillar of the Community United States 842 Posts	Posted 10/16/2011 12:42 am I came across this provincial coin for sale on Tantalus. The seller has attributed it as Tiberius, minted in Seleukis and Pieria. I agree that it was definitely minted at this location, but I am unsure that Tiberius is correct. There is only a faint trace of one or two letters left on the obverse, so we have nothing but the bust to go off of. Seleukis and Pieria minted coins that resemble this one for the emperors Augustus, Tiberius, Germanicus, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vespasian, Titus, Domitian, Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Macrinus, and many more. Can anyone identify which emperor is the correct one? The size of this coin is 25mm, so hopefully this helps....Thanks guys! Bing Pillar of the Community United States 4253 Posts	Posted 10/16/2011 09:29 am This is beyond my capabilities to attribute, However, I think the bust type may give us a few clues and narrow the field some. I'm think the bust type was used for only three or maybe four of those you listed. The three would be Germanicus, Claudius, and Nero. The fourth I would add if these three don't prove out would be Augustus, but only as a last resort IMHO. Personally, I think I would concentrate on Claudius and Nero. JW Report this Post to the Staff

I am not sure if that is the best approach given the fact that provincial ancients are not always the same size. Perhaps I could send it in to Rasiel if I decide to get it.
