I wanted to get some thoughts on this 1881H N spur.
Treated it with goo-gone to remove dirt, then an 8 hour hydrogen peroxide bath with several gentle scrubbings to remove some encrustations, but stopped short of stripping a nice green patina. Left some corrosion/encrustations I couldn't do much with. Finished off with renaissance wax.
Coin cleaning or coin restoration?
I lean to restoration as the patina is untouched. Looks quite decent in person now .
Decent coin. It's obviously a dug coin, one recovered using a metal detector. I like dug coins but most collectors don't. Some are a burnished black in appearance and for my money this is the best patina possible for a large cent.
It's cleaning. It would take a jump rather than a lean to call it restoration. However a)it's your coin b)you paid 5 bucks c)the important feature(the spur) is now apparent d)it looks better and e)it's your coin
