As a general rule coins with people that actually existed rank pretty low on my list. Early Lincoln cents are partially forgiven only because I like the wheat reverse. As opposed to the original post, Flying Eagle cents are my favorite type of cent. The fusable alloy cent that Captainfwiffo posted is pretty bad (you can use it to scare small children on Halloween!). However, I like that coin because, as a science, it has the word "Science" on it. Given the anti-science atmosphere that is out there in some circles today, it is nice to see recognition of its importance from the very beginning of our country.

I can easily find 10 or more State Quarters with worse (committee) design than any coins listed so far. Sap is right on with his choice of the Florida quarter, and the Wisconsin is right behind it. (And the more I look at the Kansas quarter, the less I like it - a bison does NOT represent Kansas very well - heck, ND used it, too - and speaking as one who submitted a busy quarter design worse than WI or FL, I believe that a sunflower flanked by a grain elevator might well have been a more representational design. Best quarter designs? CT, TX, OK.

I've seen Connecticut on lists of the worst State Quarter designs, but I don't know why. It could be my favorite. They focused on making a great coin design with one major design element making the best use of the small space. The worst are the ones where they just try to cram in lots of random famous stuff from the state, like Florida or Pennsylvania. People criticize the Michigan one for just having an outline of the Great Lakes, but would it really be better if they crammed in a car, and a apple tree/blossom, and a robin and a Petoskey stone?

Which do you mean? Like classic gold coins or modern? Liberty head? Indian head? I agree about the Liberty head design, but the 20th century designs are amazing. I'd say he means this My top ten? I may have to work on that. Between the commemoratives, and the State Quarters, and many of the 20th century issues there are just so many to chose from. I will say my number one choice for the worst has to be the Special Olympics dollar obv. The picture posted up above does not show just how bad it is because it is out of focus. The sharper you get the focus on that coin the worse it looks.

Number one has got to be the special olympics commemorative...and the cruel irony too. One could say that obverse is aesthetically challenged.
It actually frightens me a little bit. Whoever approved that obverse should have been fired. People say so and so should be fired for flops and sometimes its a bit harsh, but seriously, that mis-step should have resulted in a lost job.

The coin, unfortunately, is a fairly accurate depiction of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Maybe they could have done something else other than a bust, like have her shown as a standing figure with some of the athletes or something.

Thanks for posting that Captainfwiffo. I was about to make a post saying that coin really does look a lot like Eunice Shriver. I guess people here just weren't that familiar with what she looked like. She did a lot of great things in her life, but she wasn't exactly a beauty queen.

Not sure if you are meaning worst design as in quality of design or artistic design, but he is what I'd say... Quality of Design- -Post 1982 Pennies (So many look like crap after only a year or two) -Buffalo Nickels (because the dates have rubbed off on so many) -Standing Liberty Quarter (Same as Buffalo nickels) -Circulated Sacagawea & Presidential dollars (They look dingy so quickly) Artistic Design- -SBA dollars -Special Olympics (Honestly the designers didn't have a lot to work with on these first 2) -2005 Nickel Obverse (what were they thinking) - Kansas Quarter (Seemed the least original) -I can look past anything designed prior to the 1950's due to age of the coins
