beautiful 50c coins! I started my foray into the world of numismatics with quarters, but it's all about the halves for me now

I'm confused after collecting 50 cents for a while. 50 cents before 1967 seems very simple, one or maybe two each year. after 1968, things getting messy. there are several versions I found so far, coins from a roll, Proof-like from PL set, specimen finish(vertical brushed background) proof from proof set and then silver proof. from recent ebay record, specimen coins are more expensive than proof coins. is there any data available showing the mintage of each kind each year? thanks

I think as far as catalogs go, both the "Charlton Standart Catalogue Canadian Coins" and the "Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins" have the mintage numbers for each of the different struck coins/specimen year sets, proof year sets, etc.

Your welcome! For the proof and specimen coins, you just need to check the mintage of the entire proof/specimen set for a certain year. Each proof/specimen coin will generally have the same mintage. Catalogs won't usually give you mintages for the individual proof/specimen coins that were part of a set.

1897 CDN 50 cent piece
I have in a box of coins from grandfather a 1897 cdn fifty cent piece. I cant seem to find anything on this coin and wondered if anyone here could help. In fact I have a few interesting old coins (none are graded) and would like find their values and maybe sell.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well, your Grandfather must have forged that 1897 Canadian 50 cent piece himself, for they didn't mint any 50 cent coins in 1897!? ... so, either you're reading the date incorrectly, or you have a fake, or you have the rarest coin on the planet!? (I'm very interested in the outcome)

I was lucky enough to have joined a coin club 10 years back. The newbie was the buyer and all the old boys sold me many 50 cent pieces for next to nothing. They were only too egar to get rid of there doubles. It is good for me and good for them. There was no luck with anything in the 1800's though.

Welcome cdnrick, to the best site for learning about coins.

The individual pginrh, is the most knowledgable KG 6th dude there is! :-) Hopefully his work will soon be published and the MYTH of only one or two of each year will be put to bed at last! There are hundreds of different Zoell variety's as well as the hundreds more P.G. has catalogued. Here is a nice 1945 that PG will end up with it. Double sided very prominent die clash, die cracks (with Zoell #'s) both sides, and this is only one of numerous differing 1945's.

1897 50 cent

hmmmm I don't think my grandfather faked it.... it looks like a pretty nice job.... Definitely not reading the date wrong....Seems odd to fake a non existent coin..... Any thoughts on its value to a collector? I will work on getting a pic uploaded...

thanks for any input
