1897 50 cent piece, eh? ... seriously? (yes, photos please) Ummm, I don't know how much it would be worth, but I would give your grandfather a hug if he is still around, otherwise, I would at least name my first born child after him! => I'm sure that you would get "a lot" for that unique coin! (I will start the bidding at $5) => photos please, please, please

Yes, a picture please or you're just trolling and teasing the masses.
But seeing as you are in the US, I'm going to assume it's a US piece and you're posting in the Canadian sub forum thereby confusing the conversation :)

I have the half-dollar set from 1967 - 2011 and a couple earlier silver ones also. They're unique coins and yes indeed are beauties! Most of mine are PL or BU but there's a few circulated tossed in there too.
SHAFTA9a has recommended to me to gather the entire set 1902 - 1966 which is tempting but the main reason that's holding me back is the price of silver.
Someday I'll get them all...

I've never really overcome my personal thinking that the 50 cent pieces until 37 were just more of the same... plain jane versions of a Florin, like we weren't deserving of nicer coins. I've collected them, yes, but I don't spend much time looking at them. It's personal thinking, not value based at all.
Don't get me wrong, the design looks much nicer to me on the smaller coins and I can live with it, it's not like I can change it now. I just appreciate the distinctly Canadian designs a lot more. This thinking is likely why I've taken an interest in Aussie Florins.

Seriously? ... wow, I'm totally the opposite. Hey don't get me wrong, for I love the changes that were made to our Canadaian coins in 1937, but all of the pre-1937 coins => those babys are the "real-deal" (they always remind me of an older-time, kinda like my Granny's era, rather than the newer designs which are more my parents and our era) ... ==>> my favorite coins are the pre-1937 quarters (and the 50 cent pieces are basically like their big brothers) But as always, thank God we don't all like the same coins, for I'm finding it hard enough to collect my favorites as it is (I don't want all of us bidding on the same coin => that would be bad for my pocket-book!)

Quote: ==>> my favorite coins are the pre-1937 quarters (and the 50 cent pieces are basically like their big brothers) Like I said I'm OK with the designs on the smaller coins, the fields don't look grey and bleak on the twenty five or Twenty Cent Piece. I still like (understatement) fishscales and a big part of that is even though some were Made in Canada, they never were stylized.I'm just fascinated with how miserable they were to work on and how hard it was to get them flat. But you take that same basic pattern, stretch it over a fifty cent piece and it looks like no one gave a flying fart. Luster is OK but not great because the fields are huge. Pull up a photo of an 1870 Florin and compare it Obverse and Reverse to our fifty cent piece. Everything about it is nicer, HRH's portrait is stunning and the reverse looks like a work of art. In the modern vernacular "We got Hosed" . In my opinion. Click on the link to the 1870 Florin three lines down in this PCGS registry set. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/all...aspx?s=72303Now look at our 1870 Fifty Cent piece. No contest in my mind. So yeah I've gathered up the set I wanted (most were bequeathed by a far better collector than I) but I can honestly say I can't recall the last time I looked them over.
