Silver fifty cent pieces are my favorite of all Canadian coins. I especially enjoy the challenge of trying to find Victorian and Edwardian pieces that have survived the ravages of time and heavy use with a minimum of damage. Of course this means looking through scores of beaters to find that one good coin with no rim dings, cleaning, or major marks.

I recently bought an 1967 silver centennial 50 cent, sold in proof like condition. I also have a 1985. I rather like the 50 cent pieces and I hope to buy some more.

Inspired by a very ugly discussion elsewhere, I have decided I would like to build a complete collection of these distinctive and fantastic coins. I only have a few of them, but plan on actively adding more of them to my collection. A few of you in this thread have posted some absolutely beautiful coins... thank you for constructively promoting and protecting these vanishing coins. Your photos are seductive... they encourage others to admire and lust after them the same way you do. I'll hopefully post some photos of my own very soon!

I also have a collection of Canadian 50 cents almost complete from 1937-2011 with all varieties. The pre- 37s are coming along but a lot more scarce. To be honest 50s and 60s are very easy sets to complete. Good luck to everyone!

I'll probably start collecting 50c next year once I get the hang of everything. I'm starting small with pennys (And colored quarters) and will work my way up :).

This is one for the 50c collectors. I cannot think of any other modern Canadian coin (post-1937) where the same reverse design was used on two different denominations. I like the subtle toning that the 1967 specimen case put on this coin. With the exception of superb strikes and cameo effects, this coin is usually thrown into a different 'melt bin' of sorts - but do I really want to open that can of worms?

They are pretty easy to finish back to 1950, even the die varieties are around in abundance. It's like walking through leaves. It seems a lot folks aren't picky and in that case, user ID Asyn on ebay carries all kinds of "precious, rare, vanishing" scrap starting at .99 cents with free shipping with varieties usually noted. His money back guarantee is valid and he's legit, the coin you bid on is the coin you will get. Probably the biggest seller of Canadian coins on ebay and a good ID to watch if you are looking for common date stuff and aren't too fussy.

Asyn does have many things available... It seems his stash doesn't deplete at all. I have somethings that I bought from him on the way but at this time of year it always takes double the time to arrive.

I don't buy coins off him but I've bought a few modern commems I wanted (silver maples with coloured leaves etc). They are dead slow at shipping, but it always comes.
Except for excessive grading and non attribution of problems he seems to offer value to the casual collector.

He uses the grades Ms65 and 64 way too often but he had a nice 57 dollar with 1 water line so I took a crack at it. Should arrive any day now.

I have a 1948 can. 50 cent that I purchased back around 1960 for $50.00. It is still in the cardboard holder and has mint luster. It is at least unc. The full hair lines on the front and the mane and leg details on the lion on the back make it seem that it MAY be from a broken proof set. Any idea of the value if I were to sell it?

Welcome, we'd need a picture to give an accurate representation of value.
A business strike in AU-MS63 ranges anywhere from 250-600 - so grading it is important.
IF (and I mean it's unlikely just because of chance) it's an unimpaired specimen strike, then you're looking at more - 600 and up potentially.
