This question has popped up in a few topic strings and I'm doing my best to get answers. So for those of you who were wondering about whether PVCs are in the plastic wraps that package some of our products, would you kindly clarify which specific product you are referring to.
In the meantime, I think the list includes the new 5-packs for Toonies and Loonies as well as the 2011 Uncirc Set. What I can say is that these products all use what's called Mylar packaging, i.e. plastic sheets. As for what's in the Mylar, that's what I'm waiting for from the company that provides it to us. Thanks for your patience.
I also think some of you were wondering about the new $20 for $20 coins and the Jets coins. With these products, I can say that they are are all sealed in capsules we've been using for a long time so all should be fine there. Let me know if this is not the case.
Thanks in advance because we want to do eveything possible to meet and exceed expectations. Your help in clarifying which products you are wondering about is also appreciated as it is hard digging back into the topic strings. All too often the initial subject of the topic changes and takes on a whole new topic. That's what keeps it all very dynamic and interesting!

RCM, Thank you for your contribution on this forum. Things have really picked up since you've been around and your inputs are valued. While a few may perceive your involvment being strongly motivated by profit, I see this as a benefit to our community to have a dedicated voice. Heck, it was once said I was taking kick backs for speaking in favor of the RCM! I wish I was, so I could afford all these NCLT that keep popping every day! As you stated, the $20 for $20 is probably not an issue because the coin is encapsulated. But I am not a chemist and do not know what PVC does with other plastics.

If packaging is Mylar(BoPET, aka biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate), then it will not contain the phthalate plasticizers commonly found in soft PVC materials.

Good info.
... C_C: The mint is driven by profit - it is just a fact. Having access to someone who can go out to the departments and answer good questions technically and accurately is great... they will probably learn a lot more by going and talking to everyone. Many issues are known though and have been a problem. No need to worry about telling us about the new coins... others posted them before... when a valid question is asked find out for real... there are quality issues in the manufacturing and other issues. There is lots of ways to get the marketing info.

Yesterday, the packaging for the Loon dollar and Twoonie RCM "5-packs" were tested for PVC using the Beilstein Test. They failed miserably, with a bright green flame. They contain PVC, and if you participate in buying 5 Loons for $5 or 5 Twoonies for $10, then it is very important to remove the coins from the packaging as quickly as possible.

Quote: But I am not a chemist and do not know what PVC does with other plastics. Remember that all plastic is permeable, even the ICCS/CCCS flips and hard holders. So the relative humidity of where you store your coins is probably the most important thing you can control.

SPP Thanks for testing and confirming that. We don't even have the darn things yet & we have PVC problems.
