I just went to your photobucket page and opened one of the full sized cent photos, it seems when using the new editor the most I can enlarge it too while still retaining original pixel size is 4000 pixels and at that it looks pixelated (not bad) but nowhere near as sharp as your original file on your computer I'm sure. Probably a limitation to photobucket. My friend/roommate uses flickr.com pro account where he uploads full sized images from his camera and they actually appear full sized to those he lets see them, or to the public depending on his save preferences.

Quote: I'll do some research to see what ViewNX is all about. It should have come for free on the disk that came with your D5000. It also has capability to process your RAW (.nef) files from the D5000 as well. Quote: 3) Straightening is rotating the coin image so the mottos are perfectly horizontal. That's what I was afraid of...bad thing to do. This will hurt your image sharpness. Make sure your coin is square when you take the photo. This may also help explain the odd image size you posted. I assume the straighten also crops the image square again after straightening?

Here's something new for the El-Cheapo thread...a dedicated macro lens. I've been experimenting with the Vivitar "close focus" lenses both alone and in conjunction with their 2x Macro Teleconverters. I had very good results with the 35-70, which with the 2x Macro results in a 70-140mm f5.6-7.6 lens capable of greater than 1:1 on film (I think up to ~1.3:1 at 70mm). The result is not quite as good as a good duplicating lens, but the zoom function makes the combo very convenient for framing. Anyway, here is an example of the 35-70 in Nikon mount, and for $30 I think it's a steal...but don't forget to buy the 2x Macro to go with it! http://www.ebay.com/itm/29071456876....m1438.l2649

Here's a Tominon 105mm macro lens for a good price. NOTE that you will need an adapter for this lens since it is M40 thread. You can buy a M40-M42 adapter but it will cost approx $15. My recommendation is to decide if you want to use multiple Tominon lenses (or Rodenstock with same threading, or any other Copal #1 mount lenses) for different magnifications, and only then purchase this 105mm and an appropriate adapter. If you just get the lens, and then have to buy the adapter for just the one lens, it falls outside my El-Cheapo price range...Ray

Here is what looks like a sweet deal...one of my favorite bellows, with a nice macro lens, for what I consider an overall El-Cheapo price of $60 for both. The Vivitar Triple Track bellows is a favorite of mine and is compact, super rigid, and adjusts smoothly. Coupled with the Spiratone Flat Field Macro 75mm lens, this is a winning combo for coin photography. You will need to buy an adapter to go from M42 to you camera, but those are easy to get on ebay. Here's the link to the auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/30072379204....m1438.l2649And here are a few lenses that look like El-Cheapo deals as well, especially he 80mm Nikon for $35: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-80mm-...em4166d737cchttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Schnieder-C...em19d1e08fdehttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Isco-Gottin...em564abc1c97As always, I have no affiliation with these auctions, and also can't say these really are good deals as I don't know if the item conditions, problems, etc. But these are all items I would pick up if I didn't have too many around already, and weren't still in the middle of our big move...Ray

As always Ray, you show the masses "OLD GLASS" and most don't realize, how good it its, especially at these prices! And ANOTHER THING is Most will not realize you have some of the BEST lenses out there for Closeup/Macro and the whys and know how of how and what makes a lens work or should I say, and I should...You and SD bring so much to this forum to show us not only to how to make our obsolete junk work great, and explain in laymens terms so we can understand.. IF NOT FOR THIS we would all be seeking the $1500 PLUS lenses and still not get quite what we are trying to achieve...G

I have not seen one of these before. I'd bet this is a regular Vivitar 75mm enlarging lens being marketed as a Macro lens but I'm not sure. In any event it's a good price and I've seen pretty good results from the Vivitars: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Viv...em5d3457fc78

I was poking around lenses on ebay and found this. Is that the 75mm Perfex lens you had in your shootout? Or is it some part broken off a slide projector or something? For the price, I'm tempted to just get it to see what it is...

one must remember...an enlarging lens is not being "MARKETED" as a "MACRO" lens..... are used in film/negative to final pictures and photo's...magnification WE know them for there magnification abbillities.... Our of these lenses is there magnification abillities as well as there PREMIUM GLASS values....They take your photo's and put them into print small photo's to large.. This old glass is the reason one can have 2X2 photo's OR 8X10 inch prints....SO while the digital era is upon us this old glass can be used in a multitude of ways and cheap ultra quality!

Well, I hope somebody here got the Perfex. I wanted to put in a snipe bid, but got distracted so somebody got it for $1.50 plus shipping. I should learn my lesson one of these days...
