This will represent the Indian Head cent in my type set. I chose it because it's so free of contact marks.

How much red needs to be present to make the "red brown" designation? How would you grade this coin?

That is a really pretty coin! I think it would still be BN, but the toning is attractive. I actually prefer them this way over bright red.

I had to choose between this one and an 1887 that looked pretty much the same. There were 2 contact marks on the obverse of the 87, and the strike of the reverse was incomplete on the bow in the wreath. I thought this was a nicer specimen.

Looks like it could be as high as MS-65 brown or red-brown.

I would call it MS64 Brown, but it looks to have a good chance at MS65, nice coin.

I was leaning toward MS64 BN, too.

I'm thinking 64BN. I don't think it has enough red to give it the RB designation. It is still a very attractive cent!

Very pretty and very well-preserved. I can actually see it at MS65. Very good eye-movement through that coin.

I see no reason why this wouldn't be better than 64, or even 65. I'll assume its not MS-66, but we can't tell based on the photos because there's no chatter visible.

Sorry....I was away from the computer for awhile. I actually paid 61 money for it, and I thought it was better than that, having come to be of that opinion just from the lack of contact marks. There are probably better strikes out there, but this one spoke to me.

I'm going to build a cabinet to house my type set, so this will go straight into an airtite. All this coin needs is a big scratch across the obverse from an acetate slide.

Thanks to all for their opinions.
