Enough of us report it with the original auction number attached, ebay might just get nervous about it and do something.

Here's the report link:
http://www.ebay.com/ccw

Here are the auction numbers:
110781343856 (report auction)
280771817614 (original auction for reference)

My eyes also caught a weird pattern in the fields, more like criss-crossing brushstrokes than true "cartwheel".
I couldn't put my misgivings in words, but I see it's good to trust my gut.

Update: just for fun, I have taken the seller's pic, and adjusted contrast to bring out the pattern. Sometimes, if you reverse the image, a pattern emerges further...

Well, I did my part contacting ebay. I'm very curious as well if they will actually do something in this case but probably not. Ethics seem to be going out the window at light speed...

I note that most of the items listed in his feedback are "private" so you couldn't find out who the buyer was to enlighten them.

I checked on a couple of items that weren't private and two were slabbed and one indicated in his listing that that it had a past cleaning.

You can see buyers in the feedback.
I don't know if the auction is listed as private...
So you might not be able to match buyer to auction?

ebay will do nothing about it so don't waste your time. Don't get me wrong, I love reporting bad auctions, but I'm afraid this is not really a violation of ebay policy, is it? This guy has no business selling coins. 0 ethics. Very sad that so called 'Dealers' like this, take part in this great hobby. Obviously, these bidders have no idea what they are bidding on. Wish we could warn them.

I reported it too but the hammer will fall.

Item was purchased on ebay as a cleaned coin, which it is and is now selling as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin with less disclosing images. See this auction for the listing when it was first bought by the present seller. 280771817614 The buyer will be buying a coin that is probably over priced by 1000% and the seller will be tripling his investment by being dishonest. ebay however is making final value fees AGAIN and doing quite well. Please watch this seller and it would be nice to see the auction ended and re-listed with a more honest description. Thank you!

The scary thing about this is that the guy has a great feedback rating. I feel bad for the unfortunate person who is about to buy this dud for $600. By the way, excellent detective work guys - hardly anyone would have noticed that it was a re-sell.

I told him that it undermined his credibility by not disclosing that it had been cleaned.

His response was "I just checked the coin out, and it's MUCH nicer than the pics, with 'CARTWHEELING MINT LUSTER'. I'm sure that the winning bidder will be very happy with it. If not, I always allow a return. I just advertise it, because I don't want over picky 'speculators'."

I then said the reason I ask was that it looked identical to this ebay auction - [eBayItem]280771817614[/eBayItem]. I am awaiting a reply which don't expect I will receive!

Great detective work--definitely the same coin. If anything, this thread will be a future resource to educate collectors. You know, the seller shouting "cartwheel" in his listing put me on the alert.

Good work guys!
The auction was pulled by seller apparently.
I guess we made him nervous.

Small victory. He'll still sell the coin somehow.

After pointing it out to him directly, he stated that the coin got mixed up with another 1857 he had in stock. He said he ended the auction early and notified the high bidder stating that the listing should have indicted that the coin was cleaned.

Yes...good work to the members that spotted that! I buy on ebay frequently and don't like to see people ripped off!

P.S. I was just looking at this thread for "discouraged ebay sellers" and saw he was already listed on there on a 2/25/11 post!
