Hi, I am retired and have started collecting coins as a hobby, not as an investment. I have been looking at Indian Head cents and see descriptions stating "diamonds". What does this refer to? Thanks.

The diamonds are located on the ribbon extending from the back of the headdress down to the base of the bust. There should be four diamonds present on an uncirculated example but they can occasionally be found with some weakness due to striking issues.

I had the same exact question when I was looking to buy a nice example of an Indian Head cent. All the listings mentioned diamonds, but I couldn't see diamonds on any of the coins I already owned...

And a great type of coin to start collecting. Oddly enough as old as most are, there are numerous ones available.

to the hobby! I too started off with Indian cents. I can't quite pinpoint it, but there's something about the type that continues to intrigue me. It's a beautiful type rich with die varieties definitely worth collecting if you've got the time.
