Nice looking coin I think. Shouldn't it be in a slab though?

Attractive well-struck coin that definitely should be in a slab if it really were a "superb BU+" "trophy" coin. I suspect the faint parallel lines in the obverse field are hairline scratches from a minor cleaning and as such this coin would receive a details or genuine grade from a grading service. The bid is at $330 right now which is quite a bit higher than I would be willing to invest without an in-hand examination.

Would look nice in an album and maybe that's what the high bidders want.
Rest in Peace

This seller is a known to be fraudulent in omitting problems, and the coin is probably harshly cleaned. He tries on purpose to buy minor problem coins so he can sell them as MS-65's or whatever. Avoid. Oh by the way I have good evidence that these allegations are all factually true.

Obviously cleaned, hairline scratches all over it.
Basically a fraudulent description.

You know, you can see the dark spot above the eagle's beak on both auctions. No doubt it's the same coin.

BTW, I sure didn't see any evidence of "cartwheel" effect on that coin.

There are some good things to learn about that auction: the guy is a great marketer! I could use some lessons from him - in exchange for ethics lessons from me.

I reported him to ebay, stating he bought a damaged coin and is now selling as undamaged.
We'll see what happens. I gave ebay both auction numbers. Probably not breaking the rules though. :(

I liked it when you could contact bidders... I have given bidders the heads up and been given the heads up myself.
We should be able to look after each other like that, but ebay pulled the plug on it.

I am WAAAAAAY beyond impressed with the detective skills here, how in the world did you spot or even know this Gormang?
ebay scares me to death, but where we are there's no real other option. Anything high end I've written about on CCF just to get added info, which I have ALWAYS received and am grateful for.
Another thing, SHADOWCREATOR is there any list posted here on CCF that can help us inexperienced bidders of auctions listing sellers to avoid, for whatever reason? At least this seller has a 7 day money back policy. I had a coin come in last week that vastly different in hand than the picture, I thought I had been sent the wrong coin, but due to his photography skills the problem areas were hidden to me.
Thanks again for the post here.

I asked the seller if the coin has been cleaned.

This is the response:
"It looks very original, but I don't guarantee anything other than coins being Genuine.
If you want a coin guaranteed to slab with no problems, then I highly suggest that you buy slabbed coins.
Thank you for your interest.
Mike"

He KNOWS it was cleaned.

I used to send a message to the bidders way back when ebay allowed you to see who was bidding. I would have sent them the finished auction and told them to compare the coin in this case but we can't do that anymore. Oh well, ebay will make more money since nobody can give the bidders a heads up.
This is one great reason why this forum and the education it provides is a valuable tool all collectors should know about.
I have half a mind to write to this guy and send him a link to this post. The other half says never-mind, it won't make any difference. I just won't buy from that seller.

My first look at the coin screamed hairlines all over ... significant field hits on the reverse and damaged merchandise.

Then I read the replies ... and agree with all that was said.

Nice work gormang to find the original coin ... shame that this has been 'doctored' ... and double shame that the seller is trying to pass it off as MS ... and triple bummer for the winning bidder who is going to be very disappointed ... if they know any better.
