If it's too good to be true, it probably is. If it is one ebay, reduce that factor by 50%.

Good job you guys! Yeah, like I said before, it's very sad what ebay has become.

I really don't think he lost out at all. It did end with a winning bid. If ebay would have ended it we would just get a page that it was unavailable and removed. If the seller ended it he would have 0 bids. I think he ended it early and gave the highest bidder the coin at the time he ended it. I think he ended it early and took $607.00 for the cleaned coin because he was worried that ebay would shut it down just before it ended. Naturally ebay drags their feet because they make money when something sells. I hope to hear ebay's determination and action on the report. If they find that the listing was against the rules, perhaps they will write the highest bidder and inform them although the paypal payment may have been already sent.

I think he intended to end it early with no sale, BUT forgot to nuke all the bids first...... which means he's obligated to the high bidder at the time the listing was ended.

"Darn. I really meant to cancel the auction, but I pushed the wrong button and accidentally sold the coin, and made a $400 profit! Darn!"

At any rate, great job guys on the detective work and notifying the seller. These forums are an invaluable learning tool! Yet another reason why I won't buy higher end coins unslabbed from e-bay.

The seller told a member of another coin forum that he has 2 1857 cents, one cleaned, the other BU, and he put up a pic of the wrong coin. So he ended the auction and told the high bidder "Sorry, but the description was wrong. The coin was cleaned." I don't really believe that though, because if that was true, he would have just let the auction go and sent the BU coin. Fact is that he had lots of people bugging him from 2 coin forums and he got spooked because so many people knew what he did.

Can you imagine that poor Judith had to type the same exact letter twice. I got one too. So if the Paypal payment was made will it most likely be returned to the high bidder? Thanks for reporting this listing to us.
