Peace Dollar Been Through Fire? - Coin Community Forum

Jon K Pillar of the Community United States 723 Posts	Posted 11/30/2011 08:03 am I ran across this Peace dollar a few days ago whilst rummaging through some family stuff. It has a bit of personality, wouldn't you say? My question is if this piece may have been through a fire. The parellel marks in the toning/black marks across the surface might lead me to believe that it may have been exposed to a fire at some time and there was a board or something laying across the surface that mostly shielded the coin from the fire. Any thoughts? We did indeed have a house fire in the early 50's and it would make perfect sense that this piece was rummaged from the ashes. If so, it would be a priceless piece of family history. Could be paint? The only way I know of determining if it is fire damage is to perform a conductivity test on it. I think it probably was a pocket piece, perhaps my Grandfather's. He was known to be a fan of silver dollars, passed them out at Chrismas, etc. If it was in the house when it burned, I am not sure how that figures . . . . . That house burned about the time I was born, I have no memory of it. It was built in the mid 1800s . . . . not really a plantation home, but close to it. No one was injured in the fire, but it was a real tragedy to lose that house from the family. I might have some photos . . . . . . My dad spoke of what was lost in that house, what was in a roll top desk that he had memories of. Confederate paper money, family papers that go back to the revolutionary war, etc. I suppose I will never know for sure, but if I can somewhat verify my suspicions, I will make the story the truth for all of posterity.
