More items have been posted to the Mint's calendar: of interest is the two coins following El Yunque, Chaco Culture 5oz. on 7/9, and Acadia on 8/13. Still no pricing the coin for next week.

Quote: 10 pucks in a little over 10 months. Wouldn't be surprised if collectors simply dropped off from sheer wallet fatigue. Add that to the fact there were at least two major sales suspensions and subsequent price adjustments from $280 to $230 and finally to $205. That probably alienated and angered another subset of collectors. It's not hard to see why these coins are shunned, poor to non-existent Mint marketing, the downward momentum of Ag during the release period, the glut of 2011 coins, a veritable primer of how to do everything wrong in selling and marketing a coin to a skeptical public. Thats my theory on it that people just got over extended and had to start picking and choosing what they were going to get next. I would have been pretty mad too if I got them at 280 and then saw there were going for 205 a month later. Im sure once people miss out on one of them they give give up on the series as well. Really when you think about how badly theyve been handled the mint shouldnt be wondering why they cant sell them all. They should be wondering how they managed to sell any at all

Well the Mint has announced release dates and pricing.
05/29 El Yunque 07/09 Chaco Culture 08/13 Acadia
All at $204.95. Phooey. I'm sure we were all hoping for lower. Spot is currently just under $28, so that makes for a $65 per coin premium at the moment. That's pretty steep.
edit: sorry, didn't see that Bizybackson had already posted release dates a few posts back.

fredd thanks.
celtic: at least they spread out these releases better, still not sure why it took almost 6 months for a single word about them. But agreed the 205 price seems to be their bottom price and that premium is very high. The bullion ones are down under 170 now I think, and personally feel this version should never be more that 20 dollars max over the bullion price.

Yeah, when the Mint dropped the price for last year's pucks to $205 and the bullion versions were selling for $190, it made sense to spend the extra $15 and get the "collectible" version. With bullion versions now selling for around $155-160, however, I'm thinking it's no longer worth the high premium. I doubt the ones from the Mint will ever be as collectible as the proof ASEs, and I just can't see paying an extra $45-50 for a "vapor blast" finish and a cardboard box.
Now the only question is whether I buy the bullion version right now or wait to see if silver will drop even lower. It was below $28 early this morning and appears to be heading back down there as I type this. And who knows? Maybe next week it will be $25...

I would have been pretty mad too if I got them at 280 and then saw there were going for 205 a month later. That's the drawback to buying bullion and not "coins". And that is the main reason why I haven't bought any of them, yet. Silver is way too high and has way too much in value to drop.

Do collectors prefer the government velvet case or the big slabs like the PCGS once? I asked because a set I bought from APMEX around April of last year, APMEX had a promotion I couldn't pass. All 2010 graded MS-69. It was one of those 24-48 hours thing that they were doing then.

It all depends on the person. Some hate slabs some love it.
For what its worth personally if its a modern coin I am only interested in slabs if its a 70.
For this particular coin the P versions I would want slabbed 70s but the bullion version I would prefer raw.

I kind of was buying for silver content + since lowered to 205 I have purchased. Now I am kind of back on the fence with the difference between spot and cost growing.

It depends how you look at your collecting situation, if you treat ALL 5oz ATB as investments and thus bullion, $205 is way too much to pay. Perhaps you can get a collector coin on the aftermarket cheaper than $205, but you risk a chance on getting post-mint smudges, spots, toning or other telltale signs of physical handling or other visible impairment. At least the coins from the Mint are handled twice and usually with gloves. These are easily damaged coins with vulnerable surfaces and should generally not be left out its airtight capsule for long and always should be handled by wearing gloves. On the other hand, there are some collectors that enjoy the ATB designs and the 3" size, so paying for the $50+ premium will not bother them in the least. These US Mint issues are true collectibles in their eyes. I think that anyone looking at these as short- and medium- term investments will be bound to be disappointed by the lack of returns and by so-so practically non-existent consumer interest and probably will not last the full run of the series. I can't say if these dogs will ever have their day in the sun, but I have enjoyed collecting these for the last year, and hope to enjoy them for a long time to come. Edit- I meant to address the slabbing issue on these behemoths. The plaque sized slabs are huge, even the PCGS ones, and NGC is even larger. The premium for the 2011s are very slight over the raw coins, my Gettysburg and Olympic bullion came from MS69 DMPL holders, which I had removed.Â
